New Badge - U Comment I Follow
Published by BloggerMom on Oct 24, 2007 at 8:16 PMI kept bumping into these cute li'l buttons saying "U comment, I follow" on the blogs I visited. Curiosity killed the cat and I tried to find out more. A lesson in history enlightened me that there;s something called a "nofollow tag". The “nofollow” is a tag that can be added by a webmaster to certain hyperlinks, and it will tell search engines that they shouldn't visit that particular link. Most blogging platforms today include the nofollow tag in all signature links. The "no follows" have noble intentions of stopping spam via comment or otherwise.
There has recently been an outcry against the "nofollow tags". Randy Clay became the poster child for this movement and came up with a small picture to put up on your blogs to indicate the "No NoFollow Movement". Read more about it here. Several other prominent bloggers have also jumped on the "U comment I Follow" movement. Most sport that li'l badge on their blogs.
Comments are vital for exchanging ideas, getting opinions and generating traffic, since blogging is all about building a community. I too like the idea that we can be judicious in our comments and avoid spamming. So I am joining in the "U comment I Follow" movement.
I wanted a badge that was different which gave me a reason to install and use Adobe Photoshop. It took me a REALLY long time to hunt for tutorials that helped me bring my idea to life. But I finally managed...and the result is for you to see on my sidebar. I am not a Photoshop guru (at least not yet!)..so if anyone has any pointers about making this badge a little more sleeker and kool, please do let me know. If you want to experiment with it yourself, just give me a shoutout and I will send across PSD. Or just drop me a comment and let me know how it looks.

I was hunting for a badge to use on my site. Yours is nice, but I think it is a little bigger than what I want to use. It did, however, give me the idea "why can't I just make my own?"

commenting is a vital aspect of blogging. Without any comment on your blog you fell like something is missing. This icon gies users confidence that once they comment , you will follow.
Do follow tags helps you in some ways except that you get many spam comments. They help you to get traffic which can be monetized somehow.
Thats the part that i like about allowing do follow on my blogs.
I've recently joined the do-follow revolution as well. I think it greatly adds to user commentary.

As soon as I became aware of NoFollow I installed the Wordpress plugin. I have found that the "Stylish" Firefox plugin is useful for spotting NoFollow links. This site http://linkbuildingbible.com/2008/06/10/how-to-easily-spot-nofollow-links/ explains how to use it and provides the script to make it work.

Thanks for this post. Now I know where to get the badge as I’ve removed the nofollow in my blog. At least with the badge. it would be easier to spread to my friends about this and let my readers know.
this is probably one of the best moves you can make for your blog. for a do-follower like me, my 2-month blog gained PR4 lately. this is because more people are encouraged to leave comments when they see that you’re a do-follower, hence, there is a higher chance they will go back to your site and link with you. keep it up!

I have installed the dofollow plugin on two of my blogs to gauge the response, and if it goes well I will install it on the others. One plugin that is common with all my blogs is Andy's commentluv plugin as I reckon it is a great way to reward people for leaving a comment.
I really agree with the u comment I follow movement. It is all about building a community and how can you do that with the nofollow tags.

Because Wordpress uses the “nofollow” by default, the problem is that too many bloggers are ignorant to its actual function, or even the fact it exists. Hats off to you for taking a stand against Google.

I think the dofollow movement will help the web continue to grow in the right direction. Allow linking between sites and blogs so others can find similar topics without the need to constantly search.

I've created a dofollow website that searches only dofollow websites. This makes it a little easier for people to find them and this site has been included in the search.

I've seen many many sites use that badge. Your site is the only one that uses it honestly and has dofollow comments. All the other sites merely use it falsely to try to get comments and then keep the nofollow on.
I like that icon... I was searching for different styles (if there were any) and saw yours was very different.

It is nice to see one more in the do follow movement, as I can't understand why many of them still stick to no follow when there is no reason to do so except to stop spam which can be done by many other means. Do follow not only spreads link juice but also it encourages the commentators to comment on the blog.

I've seen in the last year (mostly) a big do-follow movement of bloggers, who prefer to offer something in exchange for the people spend their time and read / comment on their blogs.
Some bloggers who switched to do-follow blogs also declared that they noticed a nice increase of visitors and comments. Also, a big increase of spammers, but that's another story.
This really does encourage readers to leave feedback. As long as you can keep up with moderation. I've made my blog do-follow several months ago, but Askimet is a great help, indeed.
Hi, the badge of U comment and I follow look nice but if the length and color is adjusted accordingly it can look more effective.

You can always moderate comments as well. At least with word verification turned on, you'll block out automated commenting scripts that seem to be going around. They used to target guest books then moved on to include blogs.
